February 2018 saw Kettlebrook Short Stay School hold its first annual Pool Tournament. The rules of the knockout competition stated that matches between players were one game only, with the winner proceeding onto the next round and the loser being immediately eliminated.

21 students signed up to the competition. All their names were placed into a hat and a random draw took place for their starting matches. Due to the differing rules which the students had previously played by (at school, clubs, with friends etc.) a Kettlebrook Short Stay School set of rules was drawn up and agreed to by the students.

The early rounds saw some shocks, with some of the big name favourites unexpectedly going out. Others rose to the occasion, pulling off great shots, pots and upsets to progress into the latter stages. After a gruelling three days of competition, the two eventual finalists came head to head. Alfie Hulme, who played better and better with each game, faced the consistent new-comer Harvey Byrne in a tense show down. Many of the other students that had previously been eliminated turned up to watch the game over lunchtime and support the worthy finalists.

The match was a cagey affair with both players showing signs of nerves early on. Eventually, the game came down to the black ball, meaning that whoever potted the number 8 would be crowned the winner. Alfie looked certain to win at one point, as he lined up a shot with the black hovering over the pocket. However, the black bounced off both jaws of the pocket and somehow stayed out, to the gasps of the crowd. Harvey then made no mistake in seizing his life-line and potting for the victory. Congratulations champ. Harvey won a trophy and a voucher for Decathlon, whilst runner up Alfie Hulme was awarded 150 Learn2 Earn credits.

Well done to all those that put their names forward, challenged themselves and showed good sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Who will win next year’s competition? Start sharpening up your cue skills now, don’t leave it to pot luck!
